Bert Isaac (1923-2006) was a well-known painter and printmaker especially of landscapes, and also a book designer and art teacher. He was born in Cardiff and studied at Cardiff College of Art. Early in his career he was influenced by the Neo-Romantic painters such as Graham Sutherland and Keith Vaughan. Bert Isaac took up a number of teaching posts in the London area from the late 1950s becoming Head of Art at Borough Road College in Middlesex, and then at Battersea College of Education. Later he joined the Art and Design Department of the Institute of Education at London University. During this period he lived for some years at Isleworth in Middlesex and later in Ealing. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1957 and showed there through the late 1950s, the 1960s and finally in 1979. His submissions to the RA were almost always Welsh subjects. In the 1980s he returned to live in his wife’s home town of Abergavenny. He was a founder member of the Welsh Group and of the Watercolour Society of Wales. Bert Isaac’s work is held in a number of public collections including MOMA Wales, Brecknock Museum and Art Gallery and the collection of the University of South Wales. He died in Abergavenny.
