Denis Bowen, RCamA (1921-2006) was a well-known painter in various media and a gallery owner. He was born in Kimberley in South Africa but lived in England for most of his life. He attended Huddersfield School of Art and after war service he studied at the Royal College of Art 1946-50. In 1952 he was a founder of the Free Painters Group and from 1956-66 he founded and directed the dealership the New Vision Centre in London W1, along with Frank Avray Wilson and Halima Nalecz. Bowen exhibited extensively in Britain and abroad and he had three retrospective shows, including one at Huddersfield Art Gallery in 1989. He had a great interest in Celtic art and artists and was himself a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy. His work is held in many public collections internationally, including the Tate Gallery, Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum, and Kirklees Museums and Galleries.
