Donald Wells (1929-2014) was a well-known abstract sculptor, painter and printmaker. He was born at Silverdale in Staffordshire and studied art at the Newcastle-under-Lyme School of Art. Donald Wells settled in London in the 1950s and he had his first one-man show at the Artists International Association Gallery in Lisle Street, London W1 in 1962. From then on he showed in numerous exhibitions including ones in association with the Arts Council; the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh; the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw; and the Drian Gallery in London. He was a member of the Free Painters and Sculptors group. During the 1990s the artist lived and worked in Crete and then returned to live in South West London at Putney Vale.
