Edmond Xavier Kapp (1890-1978) was a well-known painter of portraits and still life subjects, a printmaker, an accomplished caricaturist, and later a painter of abstracts.  Born in London he was educated at Christ's College in Cambridge, and also in Paris and Rome. He had a large number of one man shows in London and provincial galleries as well as on the continent, in Canada and America. Subsequent to 1960 his work became exclusively abstract.  A 50 year retrospective exhibition was held at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in 1961. Kapp's work is held in a number of public collections, including the National Portrait Gallery, Imperial War Museum, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and in 1969 the Barber Institute of Fine Art, Birmingham acquired 240 of his drawings. His sister was the artist Helen Kapp and Kapp himself lived in both London and Paris.
