Francis Cox (born 1916) was a painter of urban subjects, landscapes and beach scenes. The details of his life and work are somewhat limited, at least publicly. It appears that he was married in the Ipswich area in 1940. Thereafter he and his wife Dora spent time living in South Africa, where his work appears at auction from time to time. They returned to England from Cape Town in February 1947 having been permanent residents of South Africa. In 1947 and 1948 he painted beach scenes, including of Hastings in Sussex. He is known to have exhibited his work subsequently with the well-known London dealers, Roland, Browse & Delbanco and over the next thirty years or so his work became more abstract. Francis Cox had a house boat on the River Seine for some time, and later moved to Corsica and then to Italy.
