(Frederick) Harry Baines (1910-1995) was a well-known figurative painter and draughtsman. He was born in Manchester and studied art at Manchester School of Art School of Art 1930–34. He worked on murals during the mid to late 1930s and was represented in the Tate Gallery show Contemporary British Mural Painting in 1938. From 1941-46 Baines served in the Royal Engineers which took him to India. He was seconded to the exhibitions division information department in that country. Baines was fascinated by India and the people and he returned often in the 1950s and 1960s to paint there. He exhibited at the Royal Academy and had a number of solo exhibitions, the last one being at Alpha House Gallery, Sherborne, in 1992. His work is held in the collections of The Box at Plymouth and Camden Local Studies and Archives Centre. Harry Baines lived in London NW1 for many years.
