Maxwell Doig (born 1966) is a well-known contemporary painter, draughtsman, printmaker and teacher. He was born in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire and he still lives and works in the town. He studied at Manchester School of Art 1985-88 followed by a postgraduate scholarship to Slade School of Fine Art 1988–90, where he won a Laura Ashley Scholarship. During this period he showed his work at the Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, in the Young Contemporaries exhibition, and at the Bankside Gallery in London, in 1990 winning the Joseph Webb Scholarship for the best draughtsman under 35 years of age. In 1997 he won the Villiers David Prize. Maxwell Doig travelled widely in America, Mexico and Australia, 1997. He has exhibited at the Albemarle Gallery in London W1 and more recently with Messum’s in London SW1. Jersey Arts Centre, Huddersfield Art Gallery, and the Universities of Manchester and London hold examples of his work.
