Peter Luther (1926-2009) was a well-known painter of portraits, figure subjects, town scenes and landscapes. He was born in East Preston in West Sussex and studied at Hammersmith School of Art and the Working Men’s College. Peter Luther painted extensively in France and Spain. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1959, at the New English Art Club, and had a series of one-man shows with the John Whibley gallery in London the 1960s and 1970s. His work is held in a number of public collections including UCL Art Museum, Leicestershire County Council and the London Borough of Camden. He lived in north London, near Newington Green, in the late 1950s, and then back in Sussex at Wadhurst, by the 1970s he was living in Biddenden in Kent, later removing to Bude in Cornwall.
