John Armstrong, ARA (1893-1973) was a highly original
and inventive realist painter in oil, tempera and gouache, and also
a book illustrator and designer of posters. He was born in
Hastings, East Sussex, and after Oxford University he studied art at

career. John Armstrong exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1951 and
was elected ARA in 1966. A retrospective exhibition was held at The
Royal Academy in 1975 (in conjunction with the Arts Council) and
later shows were held at The Minories, Colchester 1977, the New
Grafton Gallery 1984, and at Ewan Mundy & Celia Philo 1989. His work
is held in a large number of public collections, including The Tate
Gallery; Victoria & Albert Museum; Manchester City Art Galleries;
Glasgow Art Gallery & Museum; National Museum of Wales, Cardiff;
Bristol City Art Gallery. He lived in Cornwall from 1947 and
