Chamberlain:
Brenda Chamberlain (1912-1971) was a Welsh artist,
writer and poet. She was born at Bangor in north Wales
and studied art at the Royal Academy Schools in London
from 1931. After marrying her fellow student and
artist John Petts (1914-1991) she moved back to
Caernarfonshire in 1936 where she and Petts established
the Caseg Press, working on some projects in conjunction
with the poet Alun Lewis. Chamberlain's marriage ended
in 1946 and thereafter she lived for a time in Germany
before settling for six years on Bardsey Island, which
lies about two miles off the coast of Gwynedd. There, in
virtual isolation, she painted and wrote 'The Green
Heart' (published 1958). During this time she exhibited
regularly at the Gimpel Fils gallery, with the Zwemmer
Gallery London 1962, at The Influence of Wales
In Painting show at Brighton 1957, and at the National
Eisteddfod of Wales. In 1962 Chamberlain settled on the
Greek island of Hydra in the Aegean Sea and it is here
that she wrote 'A Rope of Vines', an account of her life
on Hydra published in 1965. Chamberlain returned to
North Wales in the late 1960s and died in Bangor after a
period of depression. A memorial exhibition was held at
the National Museum of Wales, Cardiff, in 1973.
