Cooke:
Anthony Richard Cooke (1933-2006) was a painter of
coastal scenes, landscapes and portraits usually in
oils. Born in London he studied at the College of
Design in Worthing and at the Royal Academy Schools, his
teachers including Stanley and Gilbert Spencer, Peter Greenham,
Ruskin Spear and Carel Weight. He exhibited at the RA
regularly from 1957 and had solo shows at the Trafford
Gallery in London W1, and also in Johannesburg, etc.
His work is represented in a number of public
collections including the Government Art Collection, and
the art galleries of Batley, Preston, Worthing,
Leicester, and Nottingham. He lived in Shoreham-by-Sea
in West Sussex for many years, in the early days on a
houseboat called ‘Tringa’, and following his death
Worthing Museum and Art Gallery are holding a major
retrospective show from September 2010-January 2011 of
more than eighty of Anthony Cooke’s paintings and
watercolours.
