John
Copnall (1928-2007) was a painter mainly in oils of figurative works
in the 1950s and early 1960s, thereafter he turned to abstraction.
He was born at Slinfold in West Sussex, son of the sculptor Edward
Bainbridge Copnall, and studied at the Architectural Association
1945-46. After National Service he studied with his father at Sir
John Cass College, and then under Sir Henry Rushbury at the Royal
Academy Schools until 1954. John Copnall travelled to Barcelona
in1955 for a short visit and ended up living in Spain for the next
14 years, firstly settling in Ibiza and later near Malaga. He worked
initially as a figurative painter but by the time he returned to
England in 1968 he was committed to abstraction. He taught for many
years from 1973 at the Central School of Arts and Crafts in London
and was elected a member of The London Group in 1989. Copnall also
exhibited with the Royal Academy, Wildenstein, Piccadilly Gallery
etc, and his work is held by The Arts Council, Aberdeen and Bristol
public art galleries etc.
