Alan
Davie:
Alan
Davie, CBE, RWA, HRSA (born 1920, Grangemouth, Scotland)
is an acclaimed painter, draughtsman, printmaker and
musician. He studied painting at Edinburgh College of
Art 1937-40 and after war service became interested in
the work of Paul Klee and the American Abstract
Expressionists, especially Jackson Pollock. In 1950 he
had his first London one man show with Gimpel Fils,
which led to a long and successful association with that
gallery both in London and New York. Subsequently his
work was influenced less by expressionism and he became
inspired by Zen Buddhism, the ancient arts, and African
and Indian cosmology.
Alan
Davie has exhibited widely in many countries and his
work is held in numerous important collections including
the Tate Gallery; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the
Arts Council of Great Britain; and the Museum of Modern,
Art New York. In 1993 he was given a major retrospective
show at the Barbican Gallery, London and in 2003-04
Jingling Space at Tate St Ives showed the evolution of
Alan Davie's work over more than fifty years. This
year he celebrated his 90th birthday.
