Piero Dorazio:
Piero
Dorazio (1927-2005) was an important Italian abstract
painter and printmaker, and Modernist. He was born in
Rome, and after the Second World War began exhibiting
with other young artists, including Forma 1, the first
group of Italian abstract artists. In 1947 he went to
Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts, and it was
in France that he met Georges Braque and Francis Picabia.
In 1953 he taught in the United States and became
acquainted with Willem de Koonig.
Dorazio's work is strong in colour and often with a
simple, geometric design. He exhibited widely,
especially in Italy and America. He was included in the
iconic show 'The Responsive Eye' at MOMA in New York in
1965. He lived at Todi in Umbria.
