English:
Michael English (1941-2009) was a multi faceted artist
who achieved international recognition in the 1960s and
1970s, firstly as a is a Pop Art exponent and later as a
Hyper-Realist. He was born in Bicester, Oxfordshire and
studied at Ealing School of Art. In 1967 he became
involved with the hippy movement in the UK and the USA,
and he produced psychedelic posters and painted high
profile shopfronts for boutiques such as Granny Takes a
Trip in Chelsea. During this period he worked with Nigel
Waymouth and formed Hapshash and the Coloured Coat in
1968. They produced posters for bands such as Pink Floyd
and The Jimi Hendrix Experience. Michael English showed
his work internationally, including in the British
Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 1972, and his work is
held in a number of public galleries and institutions,
including MOMA New York, Victoria & Albert Museum, the
British Council, and the Arts Council. He lived in
London.
