Gentleman:
David Gentleman (born 1930, London) is very well-known as an
illustrator, graphic artist, stamp-designer, muralist and author. He
grew up in Hertford, the son of artists who had met as students at
the Glasgow School of Art his father being Tom Gentleman. He studied
at St Albans School of Art 1947-48 and then at the Royal
College of Art under Edward Bawden and John Nash 1950-53.
David Gentleman has exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy
from 1952, and his work is represented in a number of important
public collections, including the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and
Albert Museum, the British Museum, the National Maritime Museum, and
the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. Earlier this year The Fine Art
Society in New Bond Street, W1 held a major exhibition of his work,
'David Gentleman at eighty'. The artist has lived in London
for much of his life and he has travelled extensively, drawing and
painting in Britain, Europe, India, the United States, Brazil, some
of the Pacific islands, and Africa.
