Tony Giles:
Tony Giles (1925-1994) was a painter of landscapes and
Cornish town and industrial scenes in oil, watercolour
and mixed media. He was born in Taunton, Somerset and
was self taught as an artist. He settled in Mount Hawke,
near Truro in Cornwall in 1961 and soon made a
reputation for himself as an artist, leading to a first
exhibit at the Royal Academy in 1966 and receipt of the
English China Clay Art in Industry prize in 1971. Tony
Giles had a number of solo shows from 1962, including at
Penwith Gallery, St Ives; Bridgwater Art Centre; Orion
Gallery, Newlyn; and the Salthouse Gallery, St Ives. A
65th birthday retrospective was held at the Penwith
Gallery in 1990. John Branfield published a personal
memoir of the artist in 2005 which is essential reading
for anyone interested in Tony Giles's life and work.
