Gladstone:
Gerald Gladstone (1929-2005) was a well known Canadian
sculptor and painter, born in Toronto to English born
parents. He had his first one-man show at the Toronto
Art Gallery in 1957 and after receiving a Canada Council
grant in 1961 he was able to study in London at the
Royal College of Art. His first London show was held in
1962 at the Molton Gallery. In 1964 he held further solo
shows at the Hamilton Galleries in London and at the
Graham Gallery in New York. Gladstone's sculpture 'Venus
Probe II' was acquired by Loughborough University and
exhibited subsequently at the Whitechapel Art Gallery
1967-68. During his time in London Gladstone met Henry
Moore and was influenced by his work.
Gerald Gladstone achieved much critical success back
home in Canada and received numerous commissions,
including for the Montreal Expo 67, a mural for the
Cineplex at the Royal Centre in Vancouver, a fountain
and bronze sculpture for the Ontario government
buildings, and a fountain and precast concrete sculpture
for a memorial in California to Martin Luther King. He
was given a retrospective by the Art Gallery in Ontario
in 2003. Gerald Gladstone's work is held in a number of
public collections including in The National Gallery of
Canada in Ottawa, the University of Toronto, the
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, and the Victoria & Albert
Museum in London.
