Derrick Greaves:
Derrick Greaves (born 1927, Sheffield) is one of Britain’s best
known painters and printmakers. He was apprenticed to a sign-writer
for five years, and after attending evening classes achieved a
Scholarship to the Royal College of Art where he studied 1948–52. He
then won a Travelling Scholarship to Italy 1952–53 and met Italian
Realist artists. His first one-man exhibition was held at the Beaux
Arts Gallery, London 1953, a gallery closely associated with ‘The
Kitchen Sink School’ of realist painters. His work was shown along
with that of other Beaux Arts artists - Jack Smith, John Bratby and
Edward Middleditch - at the Venice Biennale 1956. Since then Derrick
Greaves has exhibited extensively in the UK and internationally, and
his work is held in many public collections, including the Tate
Gallery, the British Museum, the Arts Council of Great Britain, the
National Museum of Wales, Leeds City Art Gallery, Southampton City
Art Gallery, and the Art Gallery of New South Wales Australia.
He taught part-time at St Martin's School of Art 1954–64, at
Maidstone College of Art and the Royal Academy Schools during the
1960s, and was Head of Printmaking at Norwich School of Art 1983–91.
Derrick Greaves lives in Norfolk.
