Arthur Hackney RWS:
Arthur
Hackney, RWS, RE (1925-2010) was a highly respected
painter and printmaker, and brother of the artist Alfred
Hackney, RWS. He was born in Stainforth, Yorkshire and
studied at Burslem School of Art, Stoke-on-Trent, then
at the Royal College of Art in London under Robert
Austin, winning the Rome Scholarship in 1949. Arthur
Hackney exhibited at many of the leading London
galleries, including the Royal Academy, and the Royal
Watercolour Society and Royal Society of Painter Etchers
(of which latter societies he was a full member). His
work is held in a number of public collections,
including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Ashmolean
Museum in Oxford. He lived near Farnham in Surrey for many years
having been head of department at West Surrey College of Art and
Design, Farnham 1950-86.
