Hayter:
Stanley William Hayter (1901-1988) was one of the most
influential printmakers and art teachers of the 20th
century and was also noted as a painter of abstract and
surrealist pictures.
He was born in
London, son of William Harry Hayter, an artist, and
great nephew of Sir George Hayter. Hayter studied art in
his
father's studio and at Academie Julian, Paris, where his
fellow students included Anthony Gross. In 1927 Hayter
founded Atelier 17 in Paris which subsequently became
a most influential
printmaking school through which some of the world’s finest
printmakers passed early in their careers. The school was
later transferred to New York but reopened in Paris in 1950,
the New York branch being closed in 1955. Hayter’s first
one-man show was held in 1928 at the Claridge
Gallery. He was a member
of the Surrealist Group 1933-40. In 1939 he married Helen
Phillips, the American sculptor. His work is represented
in many public collections internationally. He received the
Legion d’Honneur in 1951 and lived most of his life in
Paris, which is where he died.
