John Hoyland RA:
John Hoyland, RA (1934-2011) was one of Britain's best
known contemporary painters and printmakers. Born in
Sheffield he studied at Sheffield School of Art 1951-56
and at the Royal Academy Schools 1956-60. John Hoyland's
first one-man show was held at the Marlborough New
London Gallery 1964 and thereafter he had many solo
shows at London's Waddington Galleries. Retrospective
exhibitions were held at the Serpentine Gallery 1979 and
in the Sackler Galleries of the Royal Academy 1999. He
was elected ARA 1983 and RA 1991, and in 1998 he won the
Charles Wollaston Award for the most distinguished work
in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. His work is
held in many public collections internationally,
including in the UK in the Tate Gallery, the Victoria
and Albert Museum, Government Art Collection, British
Council, Birmingham City Art Gallery, and Manchester
City Art Gallery. John Hoyland lived in London.
