William Littlejohn:
William Littlejohn, RSA, RSW, RGI (1929-2006) was a well
known Scottish painter, printmaker and teacher. He was
born at Arbroath in Angus and studied art at Duncan of
Jordanstone College of Art in Dundee 1946-50. In 1966
Littlejohn joined the teaching staff at the Gray's
School of Art in Aberdeen and later became Head. He
exhibited widely, including at the Royal Scottish
Academy from 1951, and also at the Royal Academy, New
English Art Club etc. The recurrent themes in his work
link directly to the north-east coastline of Scotland,
for example his interest in painting fish, but he was
also attracted to Japanese art and culture, and in 1984
he was awarded an RSA Gillies Award to travel to Japan.
Littlejohn was elected a member of the Royal Scottish
Academy 1973, the Royal Glasgow Institute in 1989, and
the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour
1990. His work is held in a number of important
collections, including the Scottish Gallery of Modern
Art. On his death he left the contents of his studio to
the Royal Scottish Academy.
