Robert Medley:
Robert Medley, CBE, RA, LG (1905-1994) was a well known painter,
printmaker, designer and teacher of both figurative and abstract
subjects. Born in London he studied at the Byam Shaw School of Art 1923-24, the
Slade School 1924-26, and then in Paris. From 1929-34 he
assisted Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell. Medley exhibited
at the Royal Academy (elected a member 1986) and more
frequently with the London Group from 1929, being
elected a member of the LG in 1937. A major
retrospective of his work was held at the Whitechapel
Art Gallery in 1963. Robert Medley's work is represented
in a number of public collections, including the Tate
Gallery, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, and by numerous
examples in the Government Art Collection.
