Alastair Michie:
Alastair Michie, RWA, FRBS (1921-2008) was an abstract
painter and sculptor, born at St Omer in France to Anne
Redpath, one of the great Scottish painters. He studied
architecture before the war and thereafter worked as an
illustrator and designer. Alastair Michie became
influenced by the American abstract expressionists such
as Mark Rothko and Robert Motherwell in the early 1960s
and determined to change career and to become an
abstract artist. He exhibited widely, including at the
Royal Scottish Academy, and was elected a member of the
Royal West of England Academy 1982 and a Fellow of the
Royal Society of British Sculptors 1994. His later
paintings are mainly in acrylic and mixed media and
demonstrate that he was a gifted colourist. Michie's
work is represented in the National Galleries of
Scotland and other leading public galleries. He lived
at Wareham in Dorset for many years.
