Viola Paterson:
Mary
Viola Paterson (1899-1981) was a painter and
printmaker, born in Helensburgh, now in Argyll and Bute. She was a
member of the well known Paterson family of Scottish artists and
studied art at the Slade School in London, then at the Glasgow
School of Art 1919-23. In 1924-25 she studied in Paris at L'Academie
de la Grand Chaumiere and then with Andre L'hote. Viola Paterson
travelled widely in Europe and painted extensively in France, and
also in Italy and Malta. During World War II she worked for the
Admiralty, and after some years living in London she returned home
to Helensburgh in 1955. She exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy
from 1924, also at the Royal Academy, the Glasgow Institute, Society
of Scottish Artists, and the Society of Artist Printmakers. A
retrospective exhibition was held in Havering-atte-Bower, Essex
after her death.
