Robin Philipson:
Sir
Robin Philipson, PRSA, HRA, RSW (1916-1992), painter,
teacher and printmaker, was one of the major figures in
Scottish painting in the second half of the twentieth
century. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art from
1936-40 and joined the staff in 1947. His early subjects
were mainly landscapes, still lifes and interiors and in
the 1950's he was influenced by American Abstract
Expressionism. He had his first one man show at Aitken
Dott & Son (The Scottish Gallery) in Edinburgh in 1954
and had other shows later at that gallery and at Roland,
Browse and Delbanco in London. A retrospective
exhibition was held at the Scottish National Gallery of
Modern Art in 1999.
Robin
Philipson was knighted in 1976 for his contribution to
the arts in Scotland. He was President of the Royal
Scottish Academy 1973-83 and an Honorary Royal
Academician. His work is held in many public collections
in Scotland and elsewhere. One of his paintings sold at
Sotheby's in early May 2008 for close to £200,000,
reflecting the growing international interest in his
work.
