Douglas Owen Portway:
Douglas Owen Portway (1922-1993) was a
South African born painter, draughtsman, designer and
printmaker, well known for both his figurative and
abstract work. He was born in Johannesburg, where he
studied art but was not satisfied with the instruction
and after teaching art and exhibiting his own work he
left South Africa permanently in 1959. After a period of
travelling in Europe he settled in St Ives, Cornwall in
1967 and moved to Clifton in Bristol in the early 1980s.
He also spent time working at Razac d'Eymet in the
Dordogne. Portway's work was exhibited internationally,
and in the UK he had solo shows with Drian Gallery in
London and with the Marjorie Parr and Gilbert-Parr
Galleries. He is represented in many public collections,
including the Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert
Museum.
