George Hammond Steel:
George Hammond Steel (1900-1960) was a painter of landscapes
and coastal scenes in oil and watercolour. He was born in
Sheffield and studied at Sheffield School of Art, and later
in Birmingham and London. Hammond Steel exhibited regularly
at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Watercolour
Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal West of
England Academy, Glasgow Institute, Paris Salon, etc. He is
represented in a number of public collections.
Prior to World War II, Steel's work was highly
accomplished yet consisted of rather conventional
landscapes. Subsequently, in the late 1940s and 1950s,
he produced a body of work which is very different in
execution and technique, and which is now prized by
collectors. He is most noted for his atmospheric
paintings of coastal scenes, especially of Cornwall and
East Anglia, his Essex cottage subjects, and Derbyshire
landscapes. The oils often have extensive sgraffito
(scratching to the surface of the paint by the artist)
and he employed a variety of glazes to good effect.
