Artist:
Dorothy Trotman
Bordass, RE (1905-1992)
Title: 'St Ives Bay' 1963
Description:
oil on canvas,
measuring 30 x 40 inches image size. The painting is
signed, and signed again, titled and dated on the
reverse. It also has an old exhibition label (see
photo). The view is from St Ives harbour towards
Godrevy lighthouse, some three miles distant. This is
undoubtedly one of the artist's major pictures from her
best period.
Dorothy Bordass lived in
Cornwall for some years, and she was a friend of local
artists such as Bryan Pearce. There is a sense of
naivety about her work, although of course she was a
highly accomplished painter and printmaker, having
studied in Paris and under Iain MacNab. She exhibited
at the Royal Academy, Redfern Gallery, Mercury Gallery
etc, and her work is held in public collections. A
retrospective exhibition was held at The Chappel
Galleries in Essex in 1992...
