Artist:
ALISTAIR GRANT, RBA, ARCA (1925-1997)
Title:
'Montignac' (original signed etching - framed)
Description:
Alistair
Grant was born in London but as his mother was French he
spent his childhood in Etaples, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, and
he returned regularly to the family home there. He
taught print-making at the Royal College of Art from
1955,
becoming head of the department in 1970. He was a
highly influential printmaker and his work is held by
the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and
extensively in the Government Art Collection. During
the 1950s and 1960s his work was shown frequently at the
Zwemmer Gallery in London.
The present print measures 12"x15.5" image size. It is
pencil signed and dated 1956, inscribed with the title,
and annotated 'Artist's Proof', and is quite a scarce
etching. The girl in the foreground is most probably
Eva, a French girl, from Etaples we think, who features
in many of Grant's paintings and prints from the 1950s.
The girl in the dark dress (left) is Eva's friend who
also appears in quite a few of the works from this
period.
The print was framed some time in the 1960s in the then
traditional style, and sold by the Tudor Gallery of
Denver, USA. It is in good condition, not having been
laid down, and although we haven't removed the print
from the frame, we think it likely that the margins of
the print have not been trimmed. There is some slight
time staining where the mount abuts the etching...
