Artist:
NORMAN BLACK (1920-1999)
Title:
'HAYTROUGH AND PITCHFORK' (framed oil on board)
Description:
Norman
Black was British by birth and after war service studied
art at Bradford College of Art 1948-52 . He had become
interested in surrealism as a result of the Surrealist
shows in Britain from 1936 on and was later influenced
by Julian Trevelyan, who gave him advice and
encouragement. His work has been exhibited widely in
Britain, including at the Brighton Museum and galleries
in that city, Ditching Gallery, Newquay Gallery, and
Armstrong-Hope Gallery in Marlborough, and also widely
in the United States in New York City, Los Angeles,
Atlanta and Chicago.
This beautifully executed surrealist oil is quite small,
measuring 6 x 5 inches excluding its simple frame.
Black tended to work on a small scale, given the
exquisite care and time he took over all of his
pictures. It is signed lower right, and is in good
original condition, although the frame has seen better
days and requires replacement in order to do justice to
the painting. The oil will most likely date to the
early to mid 1970s and was probably exhibited and bought
in Brighton at that time...
