Artist:
JAMES
NEAL, ARCA (born 1918)
Title:
TOWN
SCENE WITH BLACK CAR (Framed oil on board) Description:
James Neal was born in London, and studied at the
St.Martin's School of Art and Royal College of Art. He
showed his work at the Royal Academy, Royal Scottish
Academy, New English Art Club, London Group, and with
the Redfern Gallery. Solo shows included Trafford
Gallery, Wildenstein and in 1983-89 Ferens Gallery in
Hull, which gave him a two-part retrospective. A number
of public collections hold his work. James Neal has
lived in Hull for more than fifty years.
This oil on board measures 24 x 18 inches image size,
and it is signed and dated 1957. We think this work was
painted in London as Neal worked there often in the
1950s as well as painting many harbour scenes at
Whitstable in Kent. He is recorded as having painted
views of Camden and Islington in 1957.
The
painting is in excellent condition. It was once in a
public collection (Nottinghamshire County Council) but
was de-accessioned some years ago. The frame was added
we think by Nottinghamshire CC, but it doesn't do the
painting justice...
