Artist: ROWLAND SUDDABY (1912-1972)

Title: 'ABSTRACT' (original watercolour with gouache - unframed)

Description: Rowland Suddaby shot to fame in his early twenties with exhibitions at the Wertheim Gallery and a series of shows from 1936 on at the Redfern Gallery.  He was regarded by the latter as their successor to Christopher Wood, and he painted vigorous and atmospheric pictures in London and Cornwall, and later around his home in Suffolk.  Suddaby's work was acquired by many prominent collectors and public bodies.  There are 24 examples in the Government Art Collection alone.

Later in life Suddaby became interested in abstraction and he produced during the 1960s a body of abstracts mainly in watercolour and gouache, which he chose not to exhibit perhaps because of concern that these would deflect attention from his landscapes which were still very popular, appearing regularly at the Leger Galleries in Bond Street.  From what we have seen over the years, the abstracts were not normally signed.

The present work is mainly in watercolour with some gouache, and measures 13 x 20 inches.  It is in good fresh condition and is offered unframed.  It is likely to date to circa 1960.  The provenance is the estate of the artist's widow, Elizabeth Suddaby, and by descent to her daughter.  We also have several other abstracts by Suddaby, all unsigned and with the same provenance - images will be supplied upon request...
