Artist:
ROWLAND
SUDDABY (1912-1972)
Title:
'EAST ANGLIAN LANDSCAPE' (original
watercolour - unframed)
Description:
Rowland Suddaby shot to fame in his early twenties with
exhibitions at the Wertheim Gallery and a series of
shows from 1936 on at the Redfern Gallery. He was
regarded by the latter as their successor to Christopher
Wood, and he painted vigorous and atmospheric
pictures in London and Cornwall, and later around his
home in Suffolk. Suddaby's work was acquired by many
prominent collectors and public bodies. There are 24
examples in the Government Art Collection alone.
The present watercolour is double sided and measures 15
x 22 inches. The painting is in good fresh condition,
save for some minor creases at the edges, and is offered
unframed. The main image is a fine 'wet' watercolour,
painted no doubt close to Suddaby's home at Great
Cornard in Suffolk, and although it is not signed or
dated, the execution of this work points to a likely
date circa 1942/45. The watercolour on the reverse is
an atmospheric but unfinished work (see the second
photo). The provenance is the estate of the artist's
widow, Elizabeth Suddaby, and by descent to her
daughter, and authenticity is guaranteed without
reservation. We also have other watercolours by Suddaby,
mainly Post War, all with the same provenance - images
will be supplied upon request...
