MALET, RBA, SWE (1900-1973)
Title:
'DITCHLING
FROM LODGE HILL' (original signed watercolour - framed) Description:
Guy
Malet studied under Iain MacNab at the Grosvenor School
of Art and was elected a full member of the Royal
Society of British Artists in 1936 and of the Society of
Wood Engravers in 1947. He became one of the most
respected British wood engravers of the mid 20th
century, and was also a fine landscape painter in
watercolours. Malet moved from London to Sussex in the
1950s, initially settling at Seaford and he moved to the
village of Ditchling in the winter of 1964/65. His work
is held in a number of public collections, including the
Victoria & Albert Museum, the British Museum, and the
National Gallery of Canada.
This watercolour is housed in its original frame, and
was exhibited at the Sussex Artists show held at
Brighton Art Gallery. It measures about 9 x 13.7 inches
image size, and will date to circa late 1964 / early
1965. It is signed by Malet lower right and is titled
verso by the artist on his own label. Ditchling lies at
the foot of the South Downs in East Sussex, with Lodge
Hill to the north of the village.
The
frame is in reasonable condition but it does have some
minor chips and scratches consistent with age. The
watercolour is in very good condition, with strong fresh
colours...
