Artist:
MAREK
ZULAWSKI (1908-1985)
Title:
'STREET
SINGER'
(original signed lithograph, unframed but with original
backboard and artist's label) Description:
Marek Zulawski is well known as a painter, printmaker,
illustrator, muralist and maker of works in collage. He
was born in Rome of Polish parents, and settled in
London in about 1936. He exhibited at the Royal
Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, AIA, and
extensively in Poland and the United States. His work is
held in numerous public collections in Britain and
overseas. A lithograph from 1954, titled 'Man Asleep',
is in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery. He
normally signed his work 'Marek'.
We currently have two good, early works by Marek, a
large oil from the 1940s which is listed separately, and
this fine original lithograph titled 'Street Singer'.
It measures image size about 20.2 x 10.7 inches and is
very evocative of the era of Bill Haley and a young
Elvis Presley. The lithograph is pencil signed, dated
(19)55, and numbered 21 of 25 prints only.
The lithograph is unframed but has its original mount
and backboard with the artist's label giving the title
of the work and the price (then 9 guineas unframed or 12
guineas framed). The print has strong colours and is in
good condition save for some minor handling creases...
