Marek Zulawski is well known as a painter, printmaker,
illustrator, muralist and maker of works in collage. He
was born in Rome of Polish parents, and settled in
London in about 1936. He exhibited at the Royal
Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, AIA, and
extensively in Poland and the United States. His work is
held in numerous public collections in Britain and
overseas. A lithograph from 1954, titled 'Man Asleep',
is in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery. He
normally signed his work 'Marek'.

We currently have two good early works by Marek, a
lithograph from the 1950s which is listed separately,
and this fine original oil on canvas which is signed and
dated (19)47. It is in excellent untouched condition and
measures 28 x 36 inches. Although the painting is
not titled,
the subject is The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
The provenance of the painting is the Sir Robert Menzies
Memorial Trust and subsequent Christie's auction of 26th
August 1981, when it was fully catalogued. We acquired
the painting from the daughter of the buyer at
Christie's...
