Artist: S HORNE SHEPHERD (1909-1993)

Title: 'GIRL WITH PLANT' (signed colour linocut - framed)

Description: Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd was born in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s.  He came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish Artists, etc.  He moved to West Sussex later in life.

There is a distinct Cubist influence in Horne Shepherd's work which is present in this original print.  Over the years the artist honed his sense of colour which reaches maturity in this fine image, dating we think to the mid to late 1960s.  The linocut is pencil signed, titled and numbered 14 of 14 prints only.  The image measures about 18 x 15 inches, and it is housed in a simple black frame, which suits it well.  The overall size including the frame is about 26 x 21 inches.  The print is in good condition, with what appears to be full margins and no tears in the paper or discolouration (however we haven't examined the print out of the frame).  The frame has some minor chips and losses consistent with age...
