Description:
Harold Yates exhibited with the Artists International
Association and the London Gallery in the late 1930s and
he had his first one man show at Foyles Art Gallery at
the age of only 19 years. He went on to show at The
Leger Gallery, the Modern Art Gallery and in the
'Artists of Fame and Promise' exhibitions at the
Leicester Galleries. In 1989 he had a major show at the
Belgrave Gallery in London, covering his work from the
1930s to 1960s.
Yates is perhaps best known for his paintings of life at
the time of the Second World War, during which he served
in the Army. Some of these paintings are now in the
Imperial War Museum.
The present watercolour is signed and dated 1940, and is
titled verso 'Billet'. It measures 6.7 x 11 inches
sight size in its recent mount (the work is unframed)
but the paper size is more like 8 x 12 inches. The
watercolour is in good, fresh condition...
