Artist:
HUBERT
ANDREW FREETH, RA, RWS, RE (1912-1986)
Title:
'SALVATION ARMY IN WHITEHAVEN' (original framed etching and
aquatint)
Description:
Andrew Freeth was a very well known painter and
printmaker, who exhibited with the Royal Academy, Royal
Society of Painter Etchers, Royal Society of Watercolour
Painters, etc. He was elected a full member of the RA in
1965 and has work in many public collections, including
the British Museum. David Buckman in his book refers to
Freeth as being noted for 'his superbly accomplished
etchings'.
The
present work is pencil signed and dated 1957, and
is titled 'Salvation Army in Whitehaven' (this town is
in Cumbria). It measures 9 x 11.4 inches image size,
and is housed in its original wooden frame which is
in good condition for its age. The print is an aquatint
with some etching. It is in excellent condition.
The
artist has stamped the backboard with his name and
address (Northwood, Middlesex). It appears from the old
labels on the back that the Fine Art Society lent this
work and others to Winchester Art Club for an exhibition
at the Winchester College Museum in 1957. This print
was priced then at four and a half guineas, about a
week's wages for most working people then! It is one of
the best period pieces we have seen by Freeth and a
'must' for anybody building a collection of his work...
