Artist:
SINE
MACKINNON (1901-1996)
Title:
'AFTER
THE
STORM' (signed oil on canvas) Description:
Born in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland, Sine
MacKinnon studied at the Slade School in London under
Henry Tonks from 1918–1924, winning many prizes in
painting and drawing. She then moved to Paris, having
two exhibitions there before returning to London. Her
first British solo show was at the Goupil Gallery,
London in 1928. A year later she held a joint exhibition
with Stephen Bone at the Fine Art Society, London, where
they both exhibited paintings of Connemara. Mackinnon
also exhibited at the Royal Academy, New English Art
Club, Redfern Gallery, Alex Reid and Lefevre, Arthur
Tooth, and the Leicester Galleries, showing mainly
landscapes, which occasionally showed the influence of
surrealism.
She travelled extensively throughout Europe, painting in
Ireland, Italy, Spain, Greece and Switzerland but for
most of her life she resided in France. She is best
known for her paintings of Paris and of Provence, one of
which is held in the collection of the Tate Gallery.
She is also represented in other public collections in
Britain and France.
The present painting measures 13 x 18 inches image
size. It is oil on canvas, signed and dated 1961, and
has a label attached which gives the title as 'After the
Storm'. We think that almost certainly this was painted
in Provence. The painting is in good untouched
condition. The frame has some chipping and staining but
is adequate...
