Artist:
CLAUDIA
WILLIAMS (born 1933)
Title:
'FAMILY
PLAYING CHESS '
(signed oil on board - framed) Description:
Claudia Williams was born in Purley, Surrey, and
she studied at Chelsea College of Art 1950-1953, where
she was taught life drawing by sculptor Bernard
Meadows. She married the Welsh artist Gwilym Prichard
in 1954. Her work has been shown widely over the past
forty years or so in Britain and the continent, and a
major retrospective exhibition of her work was held at
the National Library of Wales in Aberystwyth in 2000.
The main focus of her work has been the family and many
of the paintings celebrate woman and motherhood. Claudia
Williams is represented in many public collections,
especially in Wales.
This work is oil on board, measuring an impressive 30 x
45 inches image size. It is signed and dated 1973, and
is in good original condition but would benefit from a
light clean. The frame appears to be original to the
picture but in our opinion it is not especially suited
to it.
At
the time this picture was painted Claudia Williams and
her husband were living at Penmon Crossroads, near
Beaumaris, Anglesey. Claudia recalls that it depicts a
family living at Deiniolen, near Bangor in North Wales...
