Artist:
S HORNE SHEPHERD (1909-1993)
Title:
'THE SUMMER HAT' (signed lithograph - mounted but not
framed)
Description:
The
Scottish painter and printmaker Horne Shepherd was born
in Dundee and he studied at Dundee School of Art and
then at the Glasgow School of Art in the late 1920s. He
came to London in the mid 1930s, and later exhibited at
the Royal Society of British Artists, New English Art
Club, London Group, Leicester Galleries, Redfern
Gallery, Royal Scottish Academy and Society of Scottish
Artists, etc. He moved to West Sussex later in life.
We
have three original prints and a drawing by the artist
being listed today (please see also earlier item
#0342). The present print is a lithograph from the
second series of 'The Summer Hat'. It is a great print
being pencil signed, titled, numbered 1 of 10 only and
annotated 'lithograph' by the artist in pencil in the
far lower left corner. The image size is 14.7 x 9.5
inches, and the paper is full size with deckle edges at
19 x 15 inches. The lithograph is in very good
condition, although there is some very minor staining
where the image abuts the mount.
This work is likely to date from the 1950s. In our
opinion the second series of 'The Summer Hat' is much
more interesting than the first series, as the artist
has added background and colour not present in the first
run. This is quite a scarce item...
