Artist:
ALISTAIR GRANT
Title:
'SPANISH INTERIOR'
(original signed colour aquatint - unframed) Description:
Alistair Grant,
RBA, ARCA
(1925-1997)
was born in London but as his mother was
French he spent his childhood in Etaples, Nord-Pas-de-Calais,
and he returned regularly to the family home there. He
taught print-making at the Royal College of Art from
1955, becoming head of the department in 1970. He was a
highly influential printmaker and his work is held by
the Tate Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and
extensively in the Government Art Collection. During
the 1950s and 1960s his work was shown frequently at the
Zwemmer Gallery in London.
He was a full member of
the Royal Society of British Artists.
The
present print measures an impressive 20"x23.5" image
size and 22.2" x 29" paper size. It is an original
colour aquatint, pencil signed, titled 'Spanish
Interior' and annotated 'Artists Proof'. Although not
dated this work will date to the mid to late 1950s. It
was priced originally at 10 guineas (marked in pencil
lower right corner by the artist). This work is scarce.
The
print is on thick, handmade paper. The margins are wider
at the sides than at the top and bottom, but we do
not believe the paper has been trimmed. The print is in
very good condition overall for its age, save for a tear
in the left hand margin (well away from the image) and
some minor handling creases. It will look fantastic
once framed!
