Description: Marek Zulawski (1908-1985) is well known as a painter, printmaker, illustrator, muralist and maker of works in collage. He was born in Rome of Polish parents, and settled in London in about 1936.  He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, AIA, and extensively in Poland and the United States. His work is held in numerous public collections in Britain and overseas.  A lithograph from 1954, titled 'Man Asleep', is in the collection of Manchester City Art Gallery. He normally signed his work 'Marek'..

We currently have three good early works by Marek, a lithograph from the 1950s (#0338), a large original oil on canvas from 1947 (#0339), both of which are listed separately, and the present work.

The present painting measures about 10.2 x 14.2 inches image size and is signed 'Marek' upper left centre.  It is mixed media, mainly gouache, and is a study for an oil from 1961 titled 'The Card Players'.  The painting has been housed in its present frame for a good many years (probably at least thirty years) and the frame has a few chips and scratches.  The painting itself is in good condition although the paper has minor undulations...
