Artist:
KATHLEEN TYSON
Title:
'A QUIET COVE'
- framed oil on canvas
Description:
Kathleen
Tyson (1898-1982) was born in Grimsby and she lived there for a good
many years before moving to Bournemouth. She studied at
Grimsby and Hull Schools of Art, and later at the
Westminster School of Art. Kathleen Tyson exhibited at
the Royal Academy, London Group, New English Art Club
etc, and she was a member of the Royal Society of Marine
Artists and the Society of Women Artists. She is best
known for her coastal scenes of Britain.
The present painting is an oil on canvas, measuring
about 20 x 24 inches canvas size, which is signed by the
artist lower right and inscribed by her with her name on
the stretcher. The oil is in good original condition
but would benefit from a light clean as the varnish has
discoloured a little in the sky area. The work is
housed in a frame about 10 to 20 years old (not the
original frame) which is in pretty good condition
although it does have one or two very minor chips.
The artist did not title the painting on the back of the
picture. Our feeling is that the work dates to the
early 1960s and that it may well be one of the oils she
produced in the Isles of Scilly during that period.
Gimble Bay, Tresco was a favoured spot of hers...
