Artist: RICHARD DEMARCO
Title: 'BACK STREET - NEW
GALLOWAY'
(framed signed original gouache)
Description:
Richard Demarco, CBE, HRSA, RSW, SSA was
born in Edinburgh in 1930. He is known internationally
as an exhibition and theatre director, and as an artist
in his own right. He is represented in many public and
private collections including the National Gallery of
Modern Art of Scotland, the Victoria & Albert Museum,
the National Gallery of Lithuania, and the Museum and
the civic art galleries of both Edinburgh and Aberdeen.
The
present work is in gouache (bodycolour) and measures
about 8.9 x 6.2 inches. It is signed and dated 1969 and
is inscribed by the artist 'Back Street - New Galloway'
(which is in South-West Scotland). On the reverse
(please see photo) the painting is inscribed 'To Jenny
Lee, with thanks, Richard Demarco'. This was apparently
a gift in 1969 to Jennie Lee, the then Arts Minister in
the Labour Government (and widow of Aneurin Bevan), whom
Demarco would have known through his extensive work for
the arts in Scotland. Baroness Lee died in 1988 and we
believe that this painting was sold subsequently at
Christies South Kensington on 24th April 1991.
The painting is in good
fresh condition save for some minor creases in the
paper. The frame is original to the picture and is in
satisfactory condition for
its age...
