Artist: FREDERICK GRIFFIN
Title: 'ESTUARY
OF THE ARUN, SUSSEX'
- framed oil on board
Description:
Frederick Griffin, ROI, NS, SGA (1906-1976) was a
painter in oil and gouache. Born in Nottingham, he
studied at Nottingham School of Art, and exhibited
subsequently at the Royal Academy, Royal Society of
British Artists, New English Art Club etc, and was a
full member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the
Society of Graphic Artists and the National Society of
Painters and Gravers. He lived in Hampstead.
We have two oil paintings
on board by Frederick Griffin. The present work measures
about 14 x 17.5 inches image size on artist's board
measuring 16 x 20 inches. It is signed by the artist
lower right and has the title ('Estuary of the Arun,
Sussex', also known as 'Boats and Quay, Sussex') and
Griffin's address recorded verso. The painting has an
exhibition label from Guildhall Art Gallery, London EC2
and there is an older label underneath that one. We
think the painting will date to circa 1965. It was
priced originally by Griffin at 20 guineas. The silver
coloured frame appears to be original and it is in fair
condition for its age, with losses in particular to the
upper edge of the frame (the work is not glazed). The
painting is in good original condition with minor
craquelure to the far left centre of the painting.
We believe that the
location for this painting is Littlehampton Harbour in
West Sussex...
