Title: 'SPANISH HILL VILLAGE' (signed oil on board - framed)

Description:  Ben Mathews ROI, PNS (1889-1975) spent much of his working life in France and Spain, and although he was elected a member of the prestigious Royal Institute of Oil Painters and President of the National Society of Painters and Gravers, he never achieved as much recognition in this country as his work deserved.  A retrospective exhibition was held at the Northampton Art Gallery in 1972, and as we have copied the catalogue below we won't repeat here further biographical information on Ben Mathews.

The present painting measures 17 x 36 inches excluding the frame.  It is signed and is titled 'Spanish Hill Village'. We are as certain as we can be that the subject was painted in Spain in the 1950s. The picture was exhibited at the National Society of Painters and Gravers in the 1950s and again as #30 in the 1972 show at Northampton Art Gallery.  It is in very good original condition. The frame is original to the painting and is in poor condition as it does have some damage (please see photo). Ideally it needs replacement but should suffice in the short term...
